The Saga of the People of Vatnsdalur / The Abbey Church at Þingeyri
The regions of Vatnsdalur valley and þing in the district of Austur-Húnavatnssýsla are the settings of the Saga of the Vatnsdalur People. The project on the area of the Saga of the Vatnsdalur People revolves around protecting and promoting and making the many antiquities relating to the Saga more accessible. The stone church of Þingeyri is unique (sanctified in 1877) and a rather new service building is near it. The year 2013 marks the 350th anniversary of the birth of Árni Magnússon, collector of precious Icelandic manuscripts.
One of the events to celebrate this is the exhibit about one of the most remarkable preserved Icelandic manuscripts, Flateyjarbók at the Þingeyri Klausturstofa Centre (the visitor centre). The exhibit also discusses the important legacy that was Árni Magnússon's significant life's work.
Guided tours of the stone church at Þingeyri and the exhibit at the Þingeyri Cloister Centre are available during summers, June 1st - August 31st, from 10:00 - 17:00 and otherwise by arrangement.
